Jounaling Prompts – Lies and Truth

April 15th, 2009 by Karen | No Comments | Filed in Journal Writing

“Repetition does not transform a lie into a truth.” (Franklin D. Roosevelt )

Do you agree with this statement? Or do you think that repeating a lie is enough to turn it into a truth? Why? Which are the borders that keep lies and truths apart?

In case you prefer another topic, here it is:

“Be absolutely clear about who you are and what you stand for. Refuse to compromise.” (Brian Tracy)

Do you believe there are times when one should compromise? Why or why not? Is it possible to compromise and still remain true to what you stand for?

Happy journaling!

Journaling Ideas – How To

April 7th, 2009 by Karen | No Comments | Filed in Journal Writing

If you keep an online journal which contains public (or at least friends-only) entries, write a how-to post. Yes, your readers will learn someting from you.

Anything goes. It can either be an important thing or a silly one. What matters here is that you’ll share your knowledge. And don’t say you “don’t have anythnig to teach.” Everyone does. (But if you really find it too hard, this difficulty might as well become your new journal writing prompt. So, write about it.)

What can you do if you don’t have an online journal, or if you do but keep it private? Then write about things that you enjoyed learning and why you did.

Alternatively, search for a how-to article on the Internet (you choose the topic), read it and describe your impressions on it. Was it helpful? Or was it a waste of time?

Journaling Writing Prompts – Idleness

April 6th, 2009 by Karen | No Comments | Filed in Journal Writing

Compare these quotes about idleness:

1. “The idle man does not know what it is to enjoy rest, for he has not earned it.” (John Lubbock)

2. “Few women and fewer men have enough character to be idle.” (E.V. Lucas)

Do you think there’s a contradiction between these statements? Do you agree with any of them? Why?

Don’t be idle; update your journal or diary now. ;)

Journal Writing Prompts – The Beatles, Rolling Stones

April 5th, 2009 by Karen | No Comments | Filed in Journal Writing

Which is the best band: The Beatles or the Rolling Stones? Why? How do you counter opposing arguments?

If you simply don’t care for either band, you can write about this too. Update your journal with your views on these bands’ fans. Do they look too fanatical to you? Or do you get along well with them? Which’s the best band ever in your opinion?

Journaling Prompts – Honesty and Deceit

April 4th, 2009 by Karen | No Comments | Filed in Journal Writing

Your journal writing prompt is this quote by Noel Coward:

“It is discouraging how many people are shocked by honesty and how few by deceit.”

Why do you think this happens? Do you feel discouraged by this fact? Or do you see it as motivation to help change the world?

Don’t you want to write specifically about the quote above? Then describe the most honest person you’ve ever met/heard about.

Journal Writing Prompts – Moral Indignation and Preventive War

April 3rd, 2009 by Karen | No Comments | Filed in Journal Writing

Read this quote by H. G. Wells:

“Moral indignation is jealousy with a halo.”

It implies that moral indignation is always insincere. Do you agree? Or do you think some people are able to feel genuine moral indignation, with no jealousy involved? Why?

Don’t want to write about it? Then update your journal with your thoughts on the following quote by Otto von Bismarck:

“Preventive war is like committing suicide out of fear of death.”

Journal Writing Prompts – Security or Adventure?

April 2nd, 2009 by Karen | No Comments | Filed in Journal Writing

This has been said by Helen Keller:

“Security is mostly a superstition. It does not exist in nature … Life is either a daring adventure or nothing.”

Do you agree? Or not? Why? Have you ever had this opinion about security vs. adventure? Or have your views on the subject changed as years went by?

If you don’t feel like writing about this quotation, write about its author. Do you find Keller’s life story fascinating? Or are you indifferent to it? Why?

Journaling Prompts – What Your Journal Writing Style Reveals

April 1st, 2009 by Karen | No Comments | Filed in Journal Writing

What does your journal writing style reveal about your personality? Use Typealyzer to find it out. Then write about the results. Are they accurate or not? Why?

Alternatively, you can use Typealyzer to analyse someone else’s online journal; write about it afterwards. You can even turn this into a funny meme. Tag some of your friends to have them analyse their own journals and share their impressions.

Journal Writing Prompts – Neutral Technologies and Violent Revolutions

March 31st, 2009 by Karen | No Comments | Filed in Journal Writing

A journaling topic for you:

“I think that technologies are morally neutral until we apply them. It’s only when we use them for good or for evil that they become good or evil.” (William Gibson)

Do you agree that technologies are morally neutral? Or do you believe that some technologies are intrinsincally dangerous? If so, which ones?

If you don’t feel like writing about this topic, try this one:

“Those who make peaceful revolution impossible will make violent revolution inevitable.” (John F. Kennedy)

Should violent revolutions be avoided at all costs? Or are there situations when they are acceptable? Would you take part in a violent revolution? Why?

Happy journaling!
