Article / Blogging Ideas – April Fool's Writing Prompt

April 2nd, 2009 by Karen | Filed under Article & Blogging Ideas.

No, this isn’t a mistake. I know April Fool’s Day is over now. However, I told you I’d give you another April Fool’s writing prompt today.

Here’s the idea: pull a “writing prank” on your readers today. They won’t be expecting it, because today it’s April 2nd. Of course, you can wait a few more days before you put the idea in practice.

This writing prank can be an article containing fake, absurd information about your niche, whichever it is. Alternatively, you can rewrite some parts of your blog, such as the tagline, sidebar items, your “about” page and so on. Just make sure to display a visible, easily accessible link to a page or post explaining that you’re only joking.

CAUTION: If you publish articles on someone else’s site, you’d better refrain from using this idea. If you publish on your own site or blog, you’ll be safer—but then again, it depends on your usual tone. Keep in mind that readers who are used to formal, impersonal content may not react well if you all of a sudden decide to play tricks on them.

I posted something on the 31st that a lot of friends thought was an April Fool’s Joke. It wasn’t.

As for showing up a day late, why not just roll it into planning for next year? Look at how elaborate some sites were yesterday — like Dear Author. THAT took some major planning, and was great fun.

Yes, anyone can roll it into planning for next year. But then the prank’s purpose would be lost, since the idea here is that you take advantage of the fact that people won’t be expecting jokes/pranks after April 1st. ;)

Thank you for your visit and your comment, Susan. :)
